I vividly recall an incident when I was in my teenage years: my parents were going away for a week so they were taking job hopefuls for a temporary governess position. After several days, they finally settled on a twenty-five year old unemployed registered nurse because she appeared demure, well groomed and very pleasant. Her school records were remarkable, likewise. She was to stay in with us for the whole week whilst my parents were on vacation. Being a legal counsel (it was easy for my dad to do criminal history checks), he was adamant on searching her name on the public criminal records database. Much to our surprise, she was busted breaking traffic laws and had 5 counts of Drunk driving charge under her umbrella. Even worse, she was caught shoplifting at a local high-end shop taking a couple of underwear! Her public record painted a real picture of her. Needless to say she was not employed — my mom had to park us at grandmother’s for 1 week. Until now, I never forget to do a background check on job applicants, businesses and companies whose tracks I cross with.
