Pairs figure skating is the movement of two partners, performing different acrobats of death spiral, pair spin, throw jump, lift, twist lift, side-by-side jumps, spins, and step sequences. You probably understand better than I do that pairs figure skating is more Russian than vodka.
Skating
Skating was formerly judged for “technical merit” (in the free skate), “required elements” (in the short program), and “presentation” (in both programs). Spiral sequences are required in ladies skating and pair skating. In singles and pairs figure skating competition, competitors must perform two routines, the “short program”, in which the skater must complete a list of required elements consisting of jumps, spins and steps; and the “free skate” or “long program”, in which the skaters have slightly more choice of elements.
Figure
Figure skating is an Olympic sport in which individuals, pairs, or groups perform spins, jumps, footwork and other intricate and challenging moves on ice. Figure skaters compete at various levels from beginner up to the Olympic level (senior), and at local, national, and international competitions. Figure skating is an official event in the Winter Olympic Games. Figures were formerly included as a component of singles competitions but were eliminated from those events in 1990.
Pairs
Pairs perform singles elements in unison as well as pair-specific elements such as throw jumps, in which the man ‘throws’ the woman into a jump; lifts, in which the woman is held above the man’s head in one of various grips and positions; pair spins, in which both skaters spin together about a common axis; death spirals; and other elements. Pairs skating involves a woman and man performing single figure skating moves (such as step sequences, jumps and spins) side by side and in unison AND specific pairs movements. Pairs always consists of a man and a woman who perform together as a team and are judged as one.
They blew the competition away at HomeSense Skate Canada and set a new high score for Pairs Figure Skating. I believe the Russian legacy of Pairs Figure Skating Champions will live on. 2010 Winter Olympics Figure Skating
