Generally speaking, the dory boat can be defined as a small boat which has a flat bottom, with the bottom planks fastened lengthwise. When I found the spot I wanted to ice fish for northerns I used the exact same techniques I had before. There were several old guys fishing and talking to them I discovered they were all using small smelt and catching small northerns and they basically said they would catch a bigger one every few days.

I moved about 50 yards from them and drilled my four holes, added the smelt and the juice and started dropping them down the holes. Before I had the fourth one ready I already had a bite on the second tip up. I pulled it up and it was a ten pound northern. Naturally it drew all the old guys over to look at it. The easiest thing is to go to the sporting goods store and ask them what the top 3 lures are for bass or whatever else you are fishing for and then get them.

There are at least 3 lures I always have with me. A red and white daredevle, a countdown rapala and a skirted spinner. Of course I also have a few different colors and sizes of jigs and tails.

No natural feathered or fuzzy things tho. I’ve found the soft plastic baits to be very good and fish have liked them for a long time. Yes, these are the bare basics but I can catch almost any type of fish on them.

You don’t need to get fancy to catch fish. Always remember that a lot of lures are created to catch fishermen, not fish.

Don’t let other people make it complicated for you. There are good bass lures that work almost all the time and that’s all you need. Keep it simple for beginning bass fishing lures.

Nothing will stimulate your senses more to the predatory power of a largemouth bass, than a surface presentation using a lure. Although the use of lures would have to be the most exciting way to catch fresh water predator fish, fresh water lures are still the most misunderstood lures used today largely due to the endless range found in tackle shops. Of course you couldn’t try them all unless of course you need to lighten the load on your wallet.

The first fresh water lures for big bass that I suggest everyone should have is the Original Snake Lure by natural Motion Lures. I found the most adorable website today and bought a costume for my daughter to wear to a Halloween parade coming up in our town. My youngster has already seen the first toy story movies that I enjoyed a few years back and once toy story 3d came out she knew that she wanted to dress up like Jessie from toy story. Night fishing walleye is tougher than fishing them in the daytime. Nothing surprising about that as it’s just harder to see when you’re fishing at night. Don’t let that stop you though. I’ve caught lots more bigger fish just after sunset than I have during the full sun of daytime.

Walleyes are probably the fish most fished for at night, up north. Probably bass or crappies down south. Fall is, to me, the absolute best time for night fishing walleyes. The water has started to cool quite a bit and the prey fish that walleyes feed on have moved in closer to shore in most fishing lakes. The walleyes know winter is coming and go on a feeding spree before the good fishing lakes freeze over.

For night shore fishing walleyes I used live bait about 99% of the time. Casting was just to much guess work when fishing from shore. Considering I was fishing walleyes it was very rocky and snag filled where I fished.

Using any kind of scent to catch fish can be very good for your fishing but it does get confusing with all of the different claims all of the fishing scent manufactures make. Do they all work, aren’t they all pretty much the same?

I’ve tried a couple of dozen different things in that area over the years. Everything from Dr. Juice to WD 40. Even fishing artificial worm scent, grubs and even scented twister tails. While nothing I’m going to tell you here is scientifically proven you will learn what has worked for me while I was fishing and how I tested it.

My grandfather and my father both believed that spitting on their bait helped them catch more fish. Funny but I never believed that as they both smoked, as I do. I let them spit on theirs and I never did and we always all caught about the same amount of fish. To me it didn’t and doesn’t work.

Gone fishing – that’s where I usually was. In the fall it was gone to fish for walleyes and northerns. Anything else we caught was an accident. Here another of the tips or techniques for newbies to catch big northerns.

One day my dad heard the northerns were biting on a small, hard to get to, out of the way, little lake that was back in the middle of a cow pasture. The road to the fishing lake was more of a trail and it’s a good thing I had a pickup as my car wouldn’t have made it back in there.

We were the only people there and I picked a spot on a small point where an arm of water that wandered back into the pasture started. It was fall and I figured the northers might be going into the shallows on the arm to bask in the sun and then come back to the deeper water to feed. Because I’ve caught lots of big fish I love to see the look on peoples faces when I throw back an 8 pound walleye or a 15 pound northern. Some days I take pictures of the fish I caught and other days I don’t. It sort of depends on my mood and how fast the fish are biting. Lol, I don’t much care if people believe me when I tell them what I caught so I don’t need the fish or the pictures of fish as proof that I did catch them.

I’m going to assume you have some knowledge about fishing for northerns but I’ll give a couple of the techniques I use and some tips on what I look for when fishing northerns in the fall.

As far as northern pike fishing lures goes I liked a large red daredevle, a fluorescent orange and gold daredevle, a magnum floating rapala, musky lures like a suick or a musky spinner. Big lures were good lures and still are under the right circumstances. However I will say that he majority of my big northerns have come on bait and not northern pike lures.

I was always hoping to catch a huge trophy northern pike but the biggest I ever caught was just a hair over 17#. Not huge by my standards but damn big for SW MN. I’ve had my picture in the paper so often I lost count and most of the fish were northerns over 8-9#. 4# northerns were pretty common but anything much above that was considered a good fish for the area. Lake Preston South Dakota is right in the center of some of the best fishing in the country. Close by are Lake Thompson which is great fishing for walleyes and perch, Lake Henry, which is connect to Thompson when the water is high, for walleyes. Then there is also Whitewood lake which is really great for perch in the winter.

Lake Thompson in South Dakota is one of the premier fishing lakes around and has a very nice state recreation area where you can rent RV and camping spaces. They also have some small cabins for rent.

I thought about buying a lot on the Missouri River because I read many walleye fishing reports for lake for oahe in SD but I really didn’t want to go that far west. Eventually I settled on Lake Thompson between Lake Preston and DeSmet SD. Lake view real estate and right on the lake at a good price.

I wanted to be on a lake that was great for fishing. Particularly for northerns, walleyes and perch. Thompson is a great lake for those and crappies and smallmouth bass.

It’s also a natural lake instead of a reservoir. The water level came up in the 80′s when they had some really wet years. A lot of farmland got flooded so it has lots of structure, stock damns, sunken trees and trees standing in the water.

There are parts of it where you can fish sand, mud, gravel or rocks. It’s a real snag filled lake and most people have the best luck with bottom bouncers. Lol, I even lost a lot of tackle fishing from my dock.

Lake thompson is big too. Somewhere around 17-18000 acres or so. Depends on the water levels. It was so big that one of the first things I did was get a map. I looked at the South Dakota GFP map but it didn’t have enough detail so I got one from the bait shop in Lake Preston.
