Sometimes it’s easy to lose your way in an unfamiliar wood. Carrying a compass and maps of the general area that you will be hunting in can help in the event that you get lost.

Carry a flashlight with extra batteries in case you get caught out after dark. There are also flashlights on the market now that operate by just a shake, eliminating the need for batteries.

Matches in a waterproof case are essential and a sharp knife is good to have as well. A traditional Bowie or a Swiss Army knife both serves the purpose.

Freshwater fishing tips and northern pike techniques

Posted by the author on March 1st, 2010

Gone fishing – that’s where I usually was. In the fall it was gone to fish for walleyes and northerns. Anything else we caught was an accident. Here another of the tips or techniques for newbies to catch big northerns.

One day my dad heard the northerns were biting on a small, hard to get to, out of the way, little lake that was back in the middle of a cow pasture. The road to the fishing lake was more of a trail and it’s a good thing I had a pickup as my car wouldn’t have made it back in there.

We were the only people there and I picked a spot on a small point where an arm of water that wandered back into the pasture started. It was fall and I figured the northers might be going into the shallows on the arm to bask in the sun and then come back to the deeper water to feed. Go to the site to read the rest of the northen pike techniques.

This is a fishing blog. Just one of many fishing blogs on the net but I hope it becomes one of the better fishing blogs on the net. For me it’s a natural to have a blog about fishing and it fits right in with this site and it’s hunting and fishing forums.

Fishing is my favorite sport. I suppose I should say fresh water fishing is my favorite outdoors sport as I don’t particularly like ocean fishing. Then again I’m not much on river fishing either. Probably because I learned to fish in freshwater lakes and that’s where I’ve done the bulk of my fishing and thats why these are freshwater fishing tips. ;)

What’s my favorite fish to catch? When I’m fishing whatevers biting becomes my favorite fish. Sure, I start out fishing for walleyes or northerns but if I find the crappies are biting good I’ll switch to crappies. Having a love for catching as well as fishing I go with what’s biting the best.

While I love fishing I stopped eating fish a long time ago. Nowdays I either give all of my fish away or throw them back. Catch and release is good for anglers, good for the fish and makes fishing better. It ensures there will be some fish for the next person who comes along.

Hottest Product For Boiling Water

Posted by the author on February 28th, 2010

Electrical kettles for tea are the hottest product for boiling water. While this drinking water might be used for coffee or fast soup too, drinking water boiled in an electrical tea kettle eliminates use on the stove, as frequently such kettles involve plugging a tiny “hot plate” into an outlet. A cord isn’t included and some more sophisticated versions are cordless, operating at 1500 watts on battery strength to remove using electrical energy within your house altogether. As far as boiling drinking water is worried, the major benefit is the electric stove tops shut off promptly when the drinking water is hot enough for tea. Handles heating up has regularly been an issue with tea kettles, and quite a few models are produced with heat-resistant handles. In addition, several electric styles possess a filter within, much like a purifying drinking water jug, and this reduces the mineral deposits inside, which regularly accumulate more than time.

Camping Water Filters

Posted by the author on February 13th, 2010

There are lots of camping water filters in the market today. Making it hard for someone to choose what product, what brand is the best. And what product or brand is best suited for this kind of setting. But if you dig deeper, One brand will stand up among the rest.

This product is backed with 50 years of solid scientific research and development. It has a carbon core that can filter the minute silt or solid particles, it greatly reduces the presence of chemicals, pesticides and insecticides in the water. It has an anti clogging features that won’t, well, clog. It can generate more than the usual capacity of water than the other brand. It also comes with a universal bottle adapter, now isn’t great or what. Plus, a zipped bag for easy storage and handling? Need I say more?

By the way, did I mention the name katadyn hiker pro? Now this is my product!

Katadyn Hiker Pro; Camping Water Filters

Posted by the author on February 13th, 2010

My good friend who is a forest ranger once told me about an amazing product, the Katadyn Hiker Pro. He showed me the product, its features and its components. At first, I was so adamant, and I told him, I already have my own water filter, but when, we headed out in the wilderness, my filter failed me. Luckily his Katadyn Hiker Pro did not. That was the time, that I told myself, I will have to get one for myself. This unique product is so good that it will make any other products look inferior and well, outdated. Just like my old camping water filters, which failed me during the time that i have to use it out there.

Camping Water Filters

I saw this guy in one of the show at National Geographic, wherein he survived the wilderness with his crude methods, getting to drink water anywhere, was it clean? I doubt it. Luckily though, for people like us who frequently wander in the wilderness, we do not have to undergo through his ordeal, we just have to use our portable camping water filters if we want some clean water. No need to drink those water like what I saw in that TV series. Just put the water in and then, wallah..clean potable water.
Just like my trusted katadyn hiker pro, I usually carry it along whenever I venture out in the wilderness, be it on hiking, camping or even staying in the log cabin in forest. I am assured that I have the potable water that I need.

Portable Generator Reviews

Portable generators are available in a wide range of power ratings. These include small, hand-portable units that can supply several hundred watts of power, hand-cart mounted units, as pictured below, that can supply several thousand watts and stationary or trailer-mounted units that can supply over a million watts. Regardless of the size, generators may run on gasoline, diesel, natural gas, propane, bio-diesel, sewage gas or hydrogen. Most of the smaller units are usually built to use gasoline (petrol) as a fuel, and the larger ones have various fuel types, including diesel, natural gas and propane (liquid or gas). Some engines may also operate on diesel and gas simultaneously (bi-fuel operation). Learn more about portable generators at PortableGeneratorReviews.org.

Renew Your Grill With Gas Grill Parts

Posted by the author on January 28th, 2010

Spring is right around the corner and that means that summer will be here before you know it. And we all know what that means. It’s grilling season again!

Time to roll out that gas grill and get it ready for some awesome grilling. To make sure everything is in working order I make sure that everything is in proper working order.

Gas grill parts can become worn with time and use, so sometimes you need to make a couple little replacements. I have a Uniflame grill, so I prefer to use only uniflame gas grill parts.

Parts for most major brands of gas powered grills are actually rather easy to get and easy to install. Don’t let a cracked hose or a stripped screw ruin your fun and festive BBQ.

These Sandals Are Made For Walking

Posted by the author on January 28th, 2010

The sandal is a kind of footwear which is usually worn indoors but is sometimes worn outdoors as well. For a warm weather shoe, the sandal would be considered a casual footwear. There are a lot of available types of sandals which can found for those looking this kind of footwear.

As you proceed for shopping it would be best to know about the many styles that can found as well as the numerous brands on the market and what kind of offer you can find. With so large of range on the market for your choice, you are certain to get the best match pair for your feet or to match to the kind of outfit you desire.

For ladies and women, this kind of footwear is usually secured with the help of straps that goes around the feet. Two designs are found namely flats and high heeled ones. Women can also discover platform sandals, which are uniquely special as compared with conventional high heels as the heels are high yet chunkier. The main point to keep in mind when spotting this version of footwear is that the foot will be exposed, so focus attention such as softening rough heels and painting the toes can make the impression more complete. Pedicures are very attention drawer in warm weather months due to the open toed shoes worn. As you may allow your nail colors to be more reserved, sandals grant you an opportunity to try out with wild toenail polish colors.

A very hot item with fashionistas everywhere is the gladiator style sandal. Research your recent or most latest tabloid magazine and you are certain to find a celebrity wearing these super-strappy Roman gladiator style shoes. Normally they are designed with heels to increase the sexiness style though you may also catch a glimpse of flat gladiator style footwear too. These types of outdoor wear is really all out to catch attention as their design were mean to do just that wherever you go. One more point to take note is to match your new found footwear with the right kind of fashions. Else they may be found out of sync.

Especially men in particularly young men, their choice and taste is the fisherman style of sandal, as these are both fashionably cool and practically feelin good. The heel of a fisherman sandal is designed to be partially or fully enclosed and comes with straps across the top of the foot. These shoes are best fitted for the beach, lake or simply strolling everywhere in the hot conditioned surroundings. Some guys (and as well as girls) delight in flip flops which are not classified under the sandal footwear as they do not have straps, simply a toe thong to secure the footwear in position. As you shop for sandals or the best in womens sandals, you will amaze to find a big range for your careful shopping.

South Dakota Pheasant Hunting and Quail Hunting Tips

Posted by the author on January 25th, 2010

Pheasant hunting in the Eastern part of South Dakota should be even better this year than it was last year. There have been a couple of easy winters in a row and a lot of reproduction the last couple of years. It looks as if pheasant hunting will be better this year than last year.

Driving from DeSmet SD on highway 25 South to interstate 90 I’ve seen more pheasants this year than I did last year and there were a ton of pheasants along there last year. It wasn’t uncommon to see flocks of 20-40 birds at once.

I’ve also seen a lot more between Lake Preston SD and Brooking SD on highway 14 than I’ve ever seen before. Same from Lake Preston to Madison SD on highway 81. There are just a ton of pheasants in the area.

Hunting in the Eastern part of SD is just as good as hunting around the Winner area. There are ample places to hunt and plenty of public land that is open for hunting. The pheasant hunting is better in SD than anywhere else in the world.

Quail hunting is one of the top sports for those on the upper crust of society. It’s considered the top hunt for the aristocracy and is practiced by vice presidents (don’t quail hunt with VP Cheney tho) and world leaders to this day. Quail hunting is considered this way because it demands a lot less of the hunter in comparison to other hunts. Read the rest of these quail hunting tips to learn more about shooting quail.

It doesn’t take place in the morning, for example, or in the shivering cold. Instead, quail hunting can be done in relative comfort and can actually be quite stylish. For this reason, many people in the upper class of society try quail hunting.

Lot of hunters stay in quail hunting lodges and many of the hunting shows you see on TV are Texas quail hunting shows. Other states, including South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Arizona, New Mexico and California also have great hunting. You can find Quail in most states but not all.

Northern pike fishing tips

Posted by the author on January 25th, 2010

What’s my favorite fish to catch? When I’m fishing whatevers biting becomes my favorite fish. Sure, I start out fishing for walleyes or northerns but if I find the crappies are biting good I’ll switch to crappies. Having a love for catching as well as fishing I go with what’s biting the best and that’s one of the great fishing tips. Fish for what’s biting..

While I love fishing I stopped eating fish a long time ago. Nowdays I either give all of my fish away or throw them back. Catch and release is good for anglers, good for the fish and makes fishing better. It ensures there will be some fish for the next person who comes along.

Because I’ve caught lots of big fish I love to see the look on peoples faces when I throw back an 8 pound walleye or a 15 pound northern. Some days I take pictures of the fish I caught and other days I don’t. It sort of depends on my mood and how fast the fish are biting. Lol, I don’t much care if people believe me when I tell them what I caught so I don’t need the fish or the pictures of fish as proof that I did catch them.

I’m going to assume you have some knowledge about fishing for northerns but I’ll give a couple of the techniques I use and some tips on what I look for when fishing northerns in the fall.

As far as northern pike fishing lures goes I liked a large red daredevle, a fluorescent orange and gold daredevle, a magnum floating rapala, musky lures like a suick or a musky spinner. Big lures were good lures and still are under the right circumstances. However I will say that he majority of my big northerns have come on bait and not northern pike lures.

I was always hoping to catch a huge trophy northern pike but the biggest I ever caught was just a hair over 17#. Not huge by my standards but damn big for SW MN. I’ve had my picture in the paper so often I lost count and most of the fish were northerns over 8-9#. 4# northerns were pretty common but anything much above that was considered a good fish for the area. South Dakota hunting and snow goose hunting

Posted by the author on January 20th, 2010

It’s almost time for spring snow goose hunting in Eastern South Dakota and the 2010 spring snow goose migration is going to start soon. Seems hunting is best right at the snow line and that’s where the geese are congregated.

They may be stalled south of the Dakotas for a bit tho as the snow cover is still a bit heavy. It’s pretty much a normal year for the snow goose tho. When the snow moves they will move but until then where they are now is where all the hunting action is. 2010 Spring Snow Geese Migration to check and see where they are now.

A federal snow goose stamp is not required and in SD you can shoot 20 snow geese per day with no possesion limit. For the cost of a license you can pretty much eat goose year around because there are sure a ton of them around waiting to be shot.

Lots of people have been planning this years snow goose hunts since they left last year. The geese are plentiful and it’s great to hear about something that isn’t endangered for a change. Heh, now if they’d make the limit on deer about 10.

If you are interested in South Dakota hunting around the Watertown, Brookings, Sioux Falls, Mitchell, Huron, Madison or Lake Preston areas you should check out this hunting board. You can post your good or bad luck hunting, ask questions about hunting from our knowledgeable members and find what areas have been hot lately or what areas they expect to be hot.

There are abundant pheasants in the area and the Lake Preston DeSmet area is on of the major duck and geese flyways in the area. Home made carp bait and fishing tackle boxes

Posted by the author on January 20th, 2010

A fishing tackle box is the next most important thing after your rod and reel. I’ve had boat tackle boxes and even some of the biggest tackle boxes. Surprisingly enough, your fishing tackle boxes and accessories will become very personal items and you won’t want anyone rummaging thru your box of Fishing Lures and equipment.

You can’t be successful at most things unless you have the right equipment. When people think of fishing, they automatically think of rods, reels, and bait. However, you cannot underestimate the power of the fishing tackle box because it plays an huge part in the success of your fishing trips.

Many people covet their tackle boxes because they represent a lifetime of trial and error regarding what methods work for which fish. Each lure has a memory or even many memories attached to it.

We all want to save money on that carp fishing essential and making it yourself is a great way to do it as home made carp bait works really well with this recipe. But if you think it is a second-best option remember that the leasers in the bait business all started out in the kitchen and most made their names famous working from their own kitchens so read on and get some very effective bait-making tips!

First you need to throw out preconceptions about baits, recipes, optimum nutritional values of bait and so on. This bait will be quick to make, very easy and simple and catch loads of big fish against competing commercial readymade baits. You can build it up with whatever cheap ingredients you want because this bait is working on just a few very potent natural carp feeding triggers that are outstanding!

Of course you could just get a commercial base mix and bulk that up but that is taking half the fun away and means your bait is not as new or unique as perhaps it could be for great results on a bait that is totally unique to you and you alone!

Where You Going On Holiday

Posted by the author on January 13th, 2010

We see advertisements for cheap airline tickets all over the place. They swamp the Internet, television, radio, and newspapers etc for good reason.

Who wants to pay eight hundred dollars for an airline ticket when they can find something similar for half the price or even less.

Cheap airline tickets have become a business all of their own with fare comparison sites, auctions, and bidding sites.

Taking that into consideration, you must admit we are all after some good holiday deals.

South Dakota Hunting Forum and Goose Hunting

Posted by the author on December 30th, 2009

If you hunt post your hunting info here. If you have questions about hunting around the Lake Preston area you can ask the bait babe or Bo as they keep up with hunting as well as fishing. If you need ammo check at the bait box as they have all kinds available and if you need a place to stay the Lake Preston Motel caters to hunters as well as fisher people. The even have a game cleaning room and a freezer so you can transport your game safely. They also have a South Dakota Hunting Forum.

South Dakota goose hunting has been good for years now. The first year I lived in Lake Preston, SD I was amazed at the numbers of geese and ducks flying overhead for days at at a time. Fall migration of waterfowl from Canada filled the sky with more flocks and birds than I could have ever counted. South Dakota goose hunting is great in both the fall and the spring.

SD has a spring goose hunting season for snows, blues and ross’ geese. The 2009 spring season for snow geese is from February 14, 2009 through May 3rd and again this year the hunting is expected to be excellent. Snow goose hunting has been excellent for more than a few years now and daily limits are common.

Spring goose hunting is as good as fall but no Federal waterfowl stamp is required. It’s a special goose season to thin out some of the snow and blue geese due to their ruining their Canadian habitat from over population.

Kayak Fishing and Used Boats

Posted by the author on December 30th, 2009

Kayak fishing is simply fishing in a kayak. Its no big deal, you just get into a kayak and head to the fishing grounds. However, it is easier said than done and in recent years, kayak fishing gained a lot of popularity, jumping right out of its 4,000-year history into the 21st century limelight. Originally developed by the indigenous inhabitants of the Arctic regions, these unique boats have undergone major modifications to allow kayak fishers today to enjoy this activity even more fully. Since the same techniques in kayak fishing are more or less the same ones used in other fishing boats, it all boils down to how the equipment on a kayak is set up, how each piece is fitted and how you are going to carry out the whole fishing activity on this little boat.

Contemporary kayaks have made kayak fishing even more appealing by having electronic fish-finders and live-bait containers installed; talk about revolutionizing the kayak fishing industry. The popularity of this form of fishing is also due to the fact that some fish do not require one to be paddling at high speeds to catch them. This allows practically anyone to get a chance to catch a fish. Some popular kayak fishing destinations in the United States include Florida, New Jersey, Texas and Jacksonville where there is even a kayak fishing tournament every May; the largest one in fact. Other locations you may enjoy this activity are Australia, South Africa and Argentina.

Buying used boats could have its advantages but also some disadvantages. There are a lot of specialized site that presents a variety of used boats from which you can choose. You can find them at low prices starting a couple of thousand dollars, depending on the size you wish.

One of the advantages in buying a previous-owned boat is the fact that you could even negotiate the price. Some examples of used boats are: the Homecruiser, priced at 495,000 dollars, ideal for a cruise with your family, the sailing boat Catamaran Imp 45ft By Sun Yachts, priced at 55,0000 dollars, jet skis like Sea Doo Utopia 185 Jet Boat, at $33,500 and so on. All negotiable.

If you are a connoisseur in terms of boats then it will be easy to choose. If not here are some tips in buying used boats. First of all you should know that it’s not like buying a used car.

Ladies Cargo Pants Are In!

Posted by the author on December 16th, 2009

Designs and fashion have changed drastically over the years. And that’s no more true then it is when it’s concerning women’s clothing.

But let’s not forget that most fashion started from a very practical place. Appearance was not the most important factor when it came to what women wore.

Speaking of which, ladies cargo pants originated due for the need to women to be able to get around without a purse and not having to worry about anything (living or non living) getting up their skirts. Cargo pants became the perfect solution.

And their blowsy cut still allowed them to be feminine. Lately designers have been able to turn practical – womens cargo pants – into fashionable.

South Dakota Lake Maps and lake view real estate

Posted by the author on December 10th, 2009

Whether you are looking for a South Dakota vacation house rental, fishing lakes or information on South Dakota tourism or South Dakota lake maps you can find what you need here. If the information you want isn’t here there will be a link to it in the navigation menu on the left.

Lake Preston South Dakota is right in the center of some of the best fishing in the country. Close by are Lake Thompson which is great fishing for walleyes and perch, Lake Henry, which is connect to Thompson when the water is high, for walleyes. Then there is also Whitewood lake which is really great for perch in the winter.

Lake Thompson in South Dakota is one of the premier fishing lakes around and has a very nice state recreation area where you can rent RV and camping spaces. They also have some small cabins for rent.

I thought about buying a lot on the Missouri River because I read many walleye fishing reports for lake for oahe in SD but I really didn’t want to go that far west. Eventually I settled on Lake Thompson between Lake Preston and DeSmet SD. Lake view real estate and right on the lake at a good price.

I wanted to be on a lake that was great for fishing. Particularly for northerns, walleyes and perch. Thompson is a great lake for those and crappies and smallmouth bass.

It’s also a natural lake instead of a reservoir. The water level came up in the 80′s when they had some really wet years. A lot of farmland got flooded so it has lots of structure, stock damns, sunken trees and trees standing in the water.

There are parts of it where you can fish sand, mud, gravel or rocks. It’s a real snag filled lake and most people have the best luck with bottom bouncers. Lol, I even lost a lot of tackle fishing from my dock.

Lake thompson is big too. Somewhere around 17-18000 acres or so. Depends on the water levels. It was so big that one of the first things I did was get a map. I looked at the South Dakota GFP map but it didn’t have enough detail so I got one from the bait shop in Lake Preston.

whitetail deer hunting, tree stands hunting

Posted by the author on December 10th, 2009

Whitetail deer and deer hunting are a dangerous topic in some places but not in South Dakota. Hunters love deer and want to be able to hunt them. Non hunters love deer and don’t want hunters to hunt them. Small problem when the two groups meet.

Whitetail deer hunting in SD is almost always good, every year. I see so many dead deer laying alongside the interstates it makes me thing a guy should just put his hunting stand at the edge of the cornfield by the interstate.

Eastern SD is whitetail hunting mostly altho a mule deer will get lost and be found in the eastern part of the state and sometimes into Minnesota. Mule deer hunting takes place in Western SD and there is a lot of western South Dakota public hunting ground for your hunting trip.

Most deer hunters are now hunting from tree stands. If you are new to deer hunting, or if you have been hunting for a while but have yet to use this tree stands hunting method, you should consider using a tree stand.

The benefits of using tree stands hunting are that you will stay out of the deer’s range of view, you will keep your scent hidden from the deer, and you will increase the range of your view. You do need to take certain precautions, however, to make sure that you protect yourself.

There are many types of stands and most are safe to use. Some of these include ladder-type stands, climbing stands, and lock-on stands. You can also nail boards to a tree. No matter what type of stand you are using, know that accidents can happen.

Bounty Hunter Tracker IV

I have a new site, http://www.bountyhuntertrackeriv.com, and have found out so much about metal detectors and their uses, I just wanted to share some of the information with you. I never realized what a great gift a metal detector could be.

I never really thought about metal detectors being used as a fun hobby or as a good way to make a few extra dollars. Like many people I thought more in terms of airport security or being scanned by security at a Pro Football game entrance.

At any rate I really like the idea of giving one as a gift. Christmas and Fathers Day seem to be the ideal days to share this great gadget. I can just see a young Dad or Grandfather taking the kids to the park to hunt for treasures. Stop over at my new site for many ideas on how to use the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV metal detector. There’s also information about other metal detectors and even some reviews and data about how metal detectors work.

Don’t Make This Mistake When Planning a Trip

Posted by the author on October 31st, 2009

The following takes a look at some of the things you should be aware of when planning a trip without much notice. This is the kind of thing that can go wrong so you’ll know what to watch out for. Hopefully with this little heads up, you won’t encounter these problems yourself.

Packing far too much:

When planning a vacation, packing always seems to be the hardest part. When planning for last minute travelling careful packing can be overlooked altogether. This results in people saying that they’ll just throw way too much in the bag and sort it out when they get there. Forget the back pain this will cause and think about the money it will cost. Airports charge a small fortune for hauling around bags that weigh too much. Don’t get caught paying extra just because you packed too much underwear.

Going on a trip to the Netherlands? Why not look for Amsterdam vacation rentals. Tip: stay at an apartment. Much more cosy than a hotel, without all the hassle. Select one of these Amsterdam apartments.
