Fear of Driving

Posted by the author on April 30th, 2011

Sitting behind the wheel can be a fairly anxiety provoking situation when an estimated 1.2 million people die in car accidents, so unsurprisingly the fear of driving is fairly common. Driving is a potentially dangerous activity, and car accidents can be severely traumatizing. Some develop a phobia of driving as a result of a traumatic experience, and others simply fear the possible consequences of going out on the road.

The fear of driving isn’t all that irrational—it’s understandable why driving would be scary to some people, what with all the crazy drivers out there. This might be the reason why you’re past your late teens and you still don’t have your driver’s license, raising eyebrows when you reveal this fact. Truthfully, if you don’t really need to drive around in everyday life, then it doesn’t matter if you have a fear of driving or not. But it’s pretty hard to escape driving in this day and age, so chances are you’ll need to learn how to drive a car. Sure, you might have someone else who can drive everywhere for you, but how long are they going to be able to do that for you and how long are you going to mooch off of them? And sometimes there’s only so much you can depend on public transportation.

It’s possible and sometimes necessary to overcome the fear of driving. One thing might help is using a GPS device such as Garmin nuvi 1450LMT or Garmin nuvi 765T. In the case of a driving phobia, the prospect might be too extreme and you might want to seek professional help, but in general cases of the nerves, something as simple as breathing exercises can help you relax in the driver’s seat. In terms of actually driving, “defensive” driving is the way to go. You can’t control what other drivers do, but you can control how you interact with them. Assume that other drivers might make a mistake and drive accordingly. This doesn’t mean that you have to be paranoid, it means being vigilant. It’s not that all the other drivers are out to get you, but they might not always be paying attention, and that’s how accidents happen. So make sure that you pay attention.

It’s a cold fact that accidents occur every day, but that doesn’t mean that they have to happen to you. It’s also true that you’re putting yourself at some risk when you go out on the road, but this is true of many things—it’s impossible to avoid risks in life. But risks are possibilities, not certainties, and the ability to drive is a benefit.

Boating

If you are the proud owner of a boat you made yourself using wooden boat plans there is one thing you need to do before the big launch. Very much like a car, you may also have to have to register your boat. There may be exceptions to this depending on the size of the craft, and whether or not it has an engine. Those with smaller boats with detachable motors may not have to worry about a title when going in for boat registration, but any other type may very well need to have a title. Each state has their own set of rules for boat registration, but you may find some things to be the same no matter where you live. So, when you first start to scan those boat building plans, don’t forget that building the boat isn’t the end of your work.

Registering A Boat

It shouldn’t be forgotten that a boat needs to be registered before it can be used on public waterways. You may not need to go through the registration process if you are boating on private land, but obviously most of us will use their boats in water meant for the public. If you have just gotten a new boat, maybe you even built it yourself using boat plans, but you have no idea what to do about boat registration, you can contact your state’s game and boating commission. They can tell you how to get one and how much it will cost. It is obviously a chore to work through red tape like this but it really is something that needs to be done to keep on the right side of the law.
